Back to Norwegian Wind - Dream page1 All text and photographs (unless stated otherwise) © Paul Timmerman, photographs taken on a cruise in 1997 After being stretched and lenghtened, we discovered Dreamward had remained just as elegant (mainly because of the use of subdued colours in her interiors), light and in spite of her increase in size just as intimate as before. Dreamward still has no atrium as is almost customary on new or rebuilt ships of this size, and one boards the vessel via a new midship lobby which was added when stretching her. One of three restaurants, the Four Seasons, was enlarged as was her casino. Brand new was the Dazzles night Club on Star Deck featuring a circular granite bar. Of the 251 newly installed cabins, 12 are very large (385 sqft) owners suites with balconies on Sun Deck. These deluxe accommodations have been appointed in rose and blue colouring and a concierge is available to fulfil your every need…..
Norwegian Dream stateroom Other important public spaces onboard: - Dining rooms The Terraces (International Deck) and Sun Terrace (Sun Deck), both with captivating views on the outer decks aft and the ocean through floor to ceiling windows, in the Terraces restaurant 20 foot high! Together with the already mentioned Four Seasons restaurant, the three main dining rooms on board. - Stardust Lounge, which is one of my favourite show lounges on any ship. The height of the room, the special curtains and the colours used give it a special ambience. It seats 720 and rises two levels. Norwegian Cruise Lines´ shows are action packed very professional staged productions not to be missed. - On top, on Sports deck aft, the Sports Bar & Grill is located. It seats 150 passengers, and gets crowded from time to time due to its popularity. The Sports Bar Grill is one of NCL’s trademarks, and is as familiar to their guests as for example RCCLS’s Viking Crown Lounge is to it's passengers. It features a series of TV-sets showing sports programmes (CNN and ISPN International) as well as old sports photographs and equipment on display. - The Observatory Lounge high atop the ship, offering great views at daytime, doubles as a disco at night time. Several partitions can be closed off for private parties or meetings. And then there are the usual public spaces, found on all cruise vessels of these dimensions: lounges and bars like the horse shoe shaped Lucky´s Bar (seating 171, Star Deck), the Rendezvous Bar (seating 48, International Deck), the intimate open seating restaurant Le Bistro (seating seating 78, International Deck), and of course a gymnasium, Casino, Kids Corner etc.......
Sun deck Stretching both vessels found place at a time that NCL needed the extra berths, in a period that NCL – after a rather financially troublesome period- tried to regain her former prominent position as one of the world leading cruise lines.
Norwegian Dream in Kiel Canal, note folded down funnel Life has been quite uneventful for this pair of ships as they run cruise after cruise for NCL. The only exception being a mishap of the Norwegian Dream in the English Channel. On August 24th 1999, she collided with the container ship Ever Decent and severely damaged her bows. Some of the Ever Decent´s containers had toppled on her foredeck. Luckily, there were no casualties. After the investigations had ended, it was concluded that Norwegian Dream had been at fault.
Damaged bow of Norwegian Dream after collision Apart from this minor accident of Norwegian Dream, there is nothing but positive comments possible regarding these ships, which both have a loyal following. The fact that -although they were enlarged- they remained as intimate as before, giving the impression that one sails on a much smaller vessel than these ships actually are, will ensure their popularity for many years to come!
