All text and photographs (unless stated otherwise) © Paul Timmerman Millennium's atrium rises through just three decks, and the focal point of this atrium is an internally lit gold-onyx stairway. Two curtains on either side at the bottom of these beautifully backlit stairs add an extra touch of luxury to this magnificent space. It was designed by Wilson Butler Lodge. Special dining rooms can be found on almost all new tonnage, especially onboard the larger vessels. Worth mentioning is the Olympic restaurant, which features original paneling and artifacts from the Olympic, sister of the ill-fated Titanic. It had been in use in a country house in England since Olympic was scrapped in the 1930´s, and was bought at an auction. This room was designed by the well known English firm Mc Neece, a firm that has designed many elegant public spaces aboard vessels like QE2, Oriana, Sovereign of the Seas etc. The musicians playing in the Olympic restaurant wear copies of White Star Line (owner of Olympic, Titanic and third sister Britannic) uniforms. The Olympic restaurant consists of three parts, one of which doubles as a kind of shipping museum, lots of memorabilia of the Olympic can be found here. Cosmos, Sunrise deck (left detail of ceiling, click for larger image) Many pieces of art are scattered on the decks of the Millennium , like paintings and sculpture. In fact some of it, the smaller pieces, almost escape your attention when moving around the ship. Choosing the right accommodation on Millennium will cause serious problems: there are 971 staterooms in 12 categories of which 780 are outside cabins. 74% of these have their own private balconies. All suites have butler service, personal computers, and internet access. Even personalized stationary is available.......
Celebrity states they are the largest afloat: 2 penthouse suites measuring an impressive 1690 sq ft. They have verandas with an outdoor Jacuzzi. A second whirlpool, a wet bar and a separate sitting lounge are also present. Dining is a special event on board the ships of Celebrity Cruises. Michel Roux, owner of the Waterside Restaurant near London supervises the cuisine. Over the years he has been most successful in preparing menus that even meet the highest demands of the cruise traveller. Most passengers have breakfast and lunch in the Ocean Cafe and dine in the main Metropolitan Restaurant which offers excellent cuisine and service. If one prefers dining a la carte, the earlier mentioned Olympic Restaurant will be your choice. Outside, on deck 10, Resort deck, a nice feature are the portholes at the far side of the deck placed in the floor, allowing you to see straight down to the sea below (see photograph above). On this deck, the Aqua Spa is the largest of it´s kind at sea. It covers over 7.000 sq meters and is operated by Steiner. An enclosed area with a large pool and two jacuzzi´s as well as four bubble baths in the corners; it is simply outstanding. Millennium and her sister ships entering service has taken Celebrity Cruises a step further again; the line has expanded also in Alaska and Europe besides her familiar cruising grounds: the Caribbean and Bermuda, where it all started for Celebrity.
