Norwegian Epic, NCL

Principal particulars:  155.800 GRT, 4100 passengers, length: 330m., number of decks 15, speed 22 knots

Norwegian Epic is 60% larger than the Jewel class ships, and  at the time she went into service was the world's third largest cruise ship. She is NCL's firts mega-cruise liner enabling NCL to compete on the level of Royal Caribbean's and Carnival's large ships.

Orginally NCL ordered three of these F3-claas ships from STX, France, but when Epic's building costs rose 25%, the other two were cancelled after a dispute with the yard.

Norwegian Epic, of the third class of Freestyle Cruising ships, offers some extraordinary features like an ice-bar where passengers can stay appr 20 minutes dressed in fur coats, a dining room where a circus tent has been set up and acrobats perform high above you while you are dining, bowling alleys etc.

The ships appearance has been much criticised because of the ungainly look of the lump, palced on top of the bridge deck, housing the luxury Courtyard cabins, which have their own pool, jacuzzi, lounge, bar and restaurant.

Cabins have been constructed with the Feng Shui approach in mind, with rounded furniture. The toilet and shower are placed in two seperate spaces in the cabin, with the lavabo on a shelf next to the bed.

Allure of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Principal particulars:  225.800 GRT, 5400 passengers, length: 360m., number of decks 16 , speed 22 knots

Yard: STX, Finland

Remarks:

Together with sister ship Oasis of the Seas the largest and by far the most spectacular vessel in the world.

Impressive is its Central Park, a real park the size of a football field with real plants and trees. In the middle of it, the Piazza can be found with several restaurants where street artists perform and concerts are given. Really unique is The Rising Tide bar, which moves up and down between Central Park and three lower decks.

Unique features are the largest climbing-walls ever, a carousel and the Aqua Theatre, the deepest pool on the high seas where ballet- and watershows are given.

Its 14 restaurants take care of passengers appetite; for example the informal Central Park Cafe where you can have a picknick-style lunch or the elegant Central Park Restuarant which seats 150 pax.

However there are some differences with sister Oasis of the Seas because some of the ships facilities were used less than expected. An example of this is the Coney Island Boardwalk featuring a carousel and shops offering ice cream, candy etc. These services come with a fee, so passengers divert to the other (free) amenities the ship has to offer. So on Allure of the Seas, these lesser performing areas have been replaced by alternative facilities.

Yard: Fincantieri, Italy

Remarks:
With their new ship Ventura, P&O aims at a younger clientele and tries to lose their somewhat stuffy image. Being 30% larger than any other vessel in the fleet, there is plenty of room for spectacular facilities like the Cirque Ventura for anyone who wants to learn the trapeze, a video wall showing live footage of seven top city skylines in the Metropolis Bar and a big play area for kids.

The ship caters for the British market and although it will attract younger passengers it is certainly not a glitzy vessel.

A large part of deck 16 is devoted to teenagers. There are play areas and playstations for the younger kids (Noddy will be there to entertain the two to four-year-olds and Mr Bump is present for the four to sevens) and there is even a rock school where teens can learn to play the guitar or drums.

AidaBella, Aida Kreuzfahrten

Principal particulars:  69.200 GRT, 2050 passengers, length: 252m, number of decks 11, speed 22 knots

Yard: Meyer Werft, Germany

Remarks:

In 1996 AIDA Cruises introduced a totally new concept called 'club cruising'. This was based on Germany's popular Robinson Club resorts. AIDA's 'club ship' style cruising was different from traditional cruising;  All the dining was buffet-style (apart form one a la cate restuarant), no dress codes.  This created a whole new area and its succes lead to lines as Ocean Village Cruises, easyCruise and Island cruises copying this cruise-product. However on the AidaBella there are more specialty restaurants, offering greater choice in dining.

She is a sister ship to AIDAdiva and AIDAluna. Her name was chosen after a competition to name the new ship and signifies the beauty of the ship. The highlight of the ship is the Theatrium, a circular, glass-walled, glass-domed theatre which doubles as a nightclub located right in the middle of the ship and surrounded by various bars.

A full-time gardener takes care of this first seagoing lawn. Her we find cruising's first bocce-games at sea. Here we find two courts for bocce ball, a game of skill imported from Italy, a putting green, with areas of slight unevenness for more challenging play and The Patio on the Lawn where snacks and coffee al fresco are served.

Carnival Freedom, Carnival Cruise Line

Principal particulars: 110.240 GRT, 2974 passengers, length: 290m., number of decks 12,       speed 20 knots

Remarks: This years series of new cruise ships will start when the Carnival Freedom makes its debut on March 5 with a nine-night Mediterranean cruise after which it will begins its schedule of 12-night Mediterranean cruises from Civitavecchia/Rome on March 14.
Not really related to her name, the theme of the ship will be a journey through the centuries with each public room featuring a different time period and culture. The Babylon Casino's interiors relate to Hammurabi's Palace, the King Supper Club remembers the 18th-century glory of Louis XIV and the Studio 70 dance club has the atmosphere of a disco in the 1970s. In this respect the names of the two dining rooms, The Chic and the Posh seem to be a bit awkward. In the Carnival Seaside Theater (inspired by Princess Cruises' Movies Under the Stars); the big screen (12 ft. high by 22 ft. wide) which hangs over the big pool will feature movies. Sixty percent of the ship's 1,487 cabins will offer ocean views or balconies, and wireless Internet access will be available everywhere onboard.

Westerdam, Holland America Line

Principal particulars: 85.000 GRT, 1848 passengers, length: 290 m., number of decks: 12, speed 24 knots

Yard: Chantiers de l'Atlantique, France. Christened by Dutch actress Renee Soutendijk

Remarks: Third vessel of the Vista-Class of ships. Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are sister ships already in service, while the last unit of this series the Noordam will be delivered in 2006. These ships are named in dutch after the four points of the compass rose. Two glass elevators on the side of the ship faced outwards to the sea offer magnificent views. Westerdam interiors are very different from those of her sister ship Zuiderdam. While Zuiderdam has glitzy interiors, those of Westerdam are more refined, almost classical, with color schemes done in warm colors (blue, purple, burgundy end gold), but there are exceptions such as the bright yellow of the atrium bar stools. Apart from her many other dining choices, the Pinnacle Grill (reservations only) serves specialty food (seafood and steaks). Her atrium spans just three decks, which is small compared to those found onboard many of her competitors which are 7 - 10 stories high.... The centerpiece is a Waterfold crystal sailing ship with crystal sails, of course a reminder of the long 130 year history HAL has in passenger shipping. As is usual on HAL vessels, there is an extensive art collection on board and the theme onboard Westerdam relates to the influence of the Dutch in the New world. Hallways give the impression of small museums. The wellness center comprises of a gym, sauna, thalassotherapy room and the Greenhouse Spa which is operated by Steiners (massages and many other treatments).

MSC Opera, Mediterranean Shipping Cruises

Principal particulars:  58.600GRT, 1756 passengers, length: 251 m., number of decks: 12, speed 22 knots

Yard: Chantiers de l'Atlantique, France. Christened by Sophia Loren.

Remarks: Same hull form as Mistral (prototype of this series of ships built for now defunct Festival Cruises in 1999). Sistership to  MSC Lirica. She features a mini-golf course, jogging area, 2 pools and 2 whirlpools. Two restuarants, shopping gallery, internet cafe, pizzeria, grill, discotheque, casino and a theatre make the array of facilities complete. All her public spaces are designed in the same style, in contrast to many other contemporary vessels, where styles differ significantly between decks or even lounges. This makes Opera a ship with a subdued, quiet atmosphere, which is just the cruise MSC offers. Although at 58.600GRT she is considered a "medium sized vessel" her roomy interiors give the impression she is much larger. Focal point is a small, 2 deck atrium with a coffee bar on the upper level encircling the atrium and a stairway leading to the reception area below which is fitted out in marble. Of her 878 cabins , 200 of these have their own balcony.

Yard: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan. Christened by Nancy Murkowski, First lady of Alaska

Remarks: Sister ship to Diamond Princess (see remarks above). Her intended name was Diamond Princess, but a serous fire while she was under construction at the Mitsubishi ship yard in Nagasaki, Japan, delayed her entry into service. So she swapped names with her sistership Sapphire Princess and both ships could enter service on time. During her inaugural ceremony, the world's largest carved sapphire, the Millennium Sapphire was at display on board. Personal Choice Dining, a Princess concept to offer passengers more flexible dining arrangements is practised in the main dining room (fixed seating arrangements) as well as in four smaller themed restaurants. Club Fusion replaces the Vista Lounge found on other ships of the Princess Fleets, and features high-tech sound equipment and video screens. Like other vessels of the Princess fleet, Sapphire Princess  makes it possible to be married at sea by the ship's captain in her wedding chapel called Hearts and Minds. Main goal of the ships designers was to continue the trend already started on the first ship of the Grand Class series of cruise ships: to realize smaller public rooms and to create an atmosphere of intimacy.
